Adventure Traveler’s Checklist

The following Adventure Traveler’s checklist will help to plan your next travel adventure. Not all items listed will be needed on every trip. Pack only what you need and leave the rest at home. Remember, you’ve got to carry what you pack.

Adventure Travel Checklist

Essential Documents

  • Passport (be sure your’s is current and will not expire before your trip ends)
  • Visa
  • Health documents (proof of necessary shots, etc.)
  • Airline, train, bus, etc. tickets (transportation)
  • Emergency information
  • Health insurance (if your personal insurance will not cover you overseas, inquire about short-term traveler’s health insurance)
  • Traveler’s checks
  • Small amount of local currency
  • Credit cards
  • Guide books and maps
  • International driver’s license
  • Photocopies of documentation
  • Tickets to special events (concerts, festivals, sporting events
  • Trip cancellation insurance
  • Hotel reservation confirmations

Packs

  • Day pack or fanny pack
  • Travel Pack
  • Duffel

Traveler’s Essentials

  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Water bottle or hydration system such as Camelbak, Ultimate Directions or Platypus
  • Water purification (pump and tablets)
  • Nylon cord (50 feet)
  • Mini sewing / repair kit
  • Flashlight (extra bulb and batteries)
  • Travel locks
  • Multitool knife
  • Luggage ID tags
  • Travel clothesline
  • Electrical conversion plugs
  • Mesh bag for dirty laundry
  • Portable iron
  • Document pouch (undercover passport carrier, money belt, etc.)

Clothing

  • Underwear
  • Travel shirt (* document pockets, security pocket a plus)
  • Travel pants (*multiple pockets, convertible to shorts a plus)
  • Socks, T-Shirts, Shorts
  • One nice outfit for theater or restaurant
  • Fleece, Polartec or wool sweater
  • Rainwear
  • Brimmed hat
  • Bandana
  • Trekking boots
  • Walking shoes (nice enough to wear into restaurants, theater, etc.)

Toiletries

  • Lip balm
  • Laundry soap (in small Nalgene bottle)
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Dental floss
  • Deodorant
  • Skin care lotions / Creams
  • Shampoo (in small Nalgene bottle)
  • Shaving cream and razor
  • Moist towelettes
  • Soap, Blow drier, nail clippers, files, scissors, etc.

Miscellaneous Items

  • Tape recorder and tapes
  • Thermometer
  • Bandanna
  • Language books
  • Currency converter
  • Radiation shield for film
  • Camera, film, lenses
  • Binoculars, Address book, Travel journal
  • Compact travel games and playing cards
  • Reading materials (paperbacks you can leave behind are best)
  • Sketch pad and pencil
  • Trinkets for gifts and trade
