The right food will help a stroke patient get stronger and feel better. Because a stroke may cause loss of hand function, altered tastes, and loss of control of the mouth and throat, choosing food for complete nutrient is essential.
- Enhance the flavor of meat, chicken or fish by maintaining or cooking them in fruit juices, wines, dressing or sweet and sour sauce
- Use strong seasonings like oregano, rosemary, basil, pepper
- Give tangy foods such as oranges, lemons, or lemonade
- Add garlic or onion to vegetables
- Ensure that foods are soft and tender
- Cut foods into small pieces or process puree texture
- Mix food with sauces
Meal replacements may also be given to patients whose mouths and throats do not function well.
