building safety tool

building safety toolIn building codes, safety is the number one reason to clearly have emergency exit signs marked on doors, stairways, halls and elevators, for where exits are not immediately visible to the occupant. They are an effective guidance tool, suitable for high traffic areas and to convey important messages, helping to reduce panic and confusion by providing a clear, easy-to-follow directional system.

Even though EXIT SIGNS are seldom even noticed by most people during normal days, but the information in this tool is the fastest way out if there is fire or some other emergency. It could make a difference between life and death. That is why it is a highly regulated legal obligation for business spaces, and a specialized market for manufacturers who can meet the legal specifications.

The location of Exit Sign is mostly at the closest exit from a building. However, there are times that they are placed in every location where the direction of travel to reach the nearest exit is not immediately apparent as mandated by the existing law.

They say that the most required feature of an exit sign is its illumination. Such that to meet the required illuminations, manufacturers develop three types of exit signs namely externally lighted, internally lighted and electroluminescent signs. Externally lighted sign needs a light source to constantly shine on it to make it visible. This type has higher luminance threshold as compared to internally laminated signs that have bulbs inside to light up the sign’s letters. Internally lit signs are typically LED type while electroluminescent signs are those coated with a glowing non-radioactive and non-toxic substance that is activated by ambient light in the vicinity of the sign.

Since there are variations in exit sign regulations, it is essential to know the local ordinances that apply to any given situation. Consulting with the fire marshal or other local authorities is a good way to ensure compliance.

However, aside from the government regulation, the benefits and other considerations must be weighed such as electrician fees; maintenance time, replacement parts (bulbs, battery, and disposal) and electricity costs must be taken into account as well before purchasing the new exit signs. All of these will have long-lasting impact to the building’s safety
