Basically, compost is defined as a combination of food waste and brown waste that is being decomposed through aerobic decomposition into a rich black soil, as Wikipedia defines. As that lay definition would indicate, compost is great stuff for the lawn and garden. But, how great? Well, let us count the ways:
- Compost provides nutrition to plants in the form of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and other trace minerals.
- Compost enhances soil biology by adding microorganisms essential for natural plant growth.
- Compost improves soil texture and structure, making clay soil have better drainage and allowing sandy soil to retain more water.
Not all compost is created equally, however. Never use compost that is hot or excessively warm to the touch, or if it smells pungent or like ammonia. If you have a big project and you’re not sure about whether or not you have good compost, visit solvita.com for range of compost testing products.

In the heat of summer, choose activities for exercise that won’t overheat your body. Some good ways to get exercise but avoid overheating are swimming, working out in air-conditioned gyms, and practicing yoga or tai chi.
Studies have found that the risk of stroke is three times higher on hotter days than on colder days. As a matter of fact, the peak months for stroke are June, July, and August. So keep yourself hydrated with water and keep cool when you exercise in the summer months.
By the way, it is most beneficial to drink water at room temperature. It is standard in this country to drink beverages on ice – however, the shock of cold reduces the internal temperature of your stomach, altering digestion. Over a prolonged period, this can injure the body’s Yang energy and impair digestion. So stick to room-temperature beverages.

Do you want to curb cravings that are making you fat? Then it’s time to make better choices about how to suppress your appetite. It’s definitely tempting to pop some pills that give fast results. But if you want lasting weight loss that will keep the fats off for good, try these natural and effective approaches to cut your cravings:
- Get Enough Sleep – sleep deprivation causes an imbalance in certain hormones, including ghrelin (which increases appetite) and leptin (which decreases appetite). When we don’t get enough sleep, our levels of ghrelin go up (weight gain) and levels of leptin go down (so we are hungrier). That said, adults should aim for at least seven hours of sleep each night.
- Eat Protein and Fiber at Meals – compared to carbohydrate and fat, protein takes more time to digest and therefore keeps you full longer. Fiber helps by absorbing water, and then expanding in your stomach – literally creating bulk to make you feel fuller and have less room for more.
- Less Variety, More Satisfaction – keep less variety of snacks foods in the house and you’ll be much better off. Research has shown the greater your options, the greater your appetite.
- Play Mind Games – serve up your food on small plates and smaller food portions will look more volumous. Be sure to keep your snacks out of sight at home and at work. Also, wear great smelling perfume or cologne and light scented candles when you have the opportunity. Interesting smells can often take your mind off of food.

When you eat out, choose restaurants that are nutrition-oriented. Avoid fast food or the typical diner serving fried, fatty foods. On the menu, the vegetarian fare is usually a healthy option, provided it is not fried.
The offered portions are often more than we need. Remember, your body can only make use of a certain amount of nutrients at a given time. Try choosing an appetizer, soup, or salad for lunch, instead of an entrée. A couple of these small dishes can fill you up and give you some variety—without leaving you overstuffed and lethargic.
If you do order an entrée, ask for a box when the entrée arrives and box up half of it before you start eating. That way you won’t try to finish the whole plate.
Eating with a close co-worker friend? Offer to split the entrée order. You’ll save money and your waistline at the same time.

Many wine makers and tasters know first-hand that enjoying a glass of white wine on a frequent basis can damage the teeth, experts say. Nutrition Research reports that a pale plonk packs an acidic punch that erodes enamel far more than red wine. It is not the wine’s vintage, origin or alcohol that are key but its pH and duration of contact with the teeth.
But study shows that eating cheese at the same time could counter the effects because it is rich in calcium. It is the calcium in teeth that the wine attacks. In the lab, adult teeth soaked in white wine for a day had a loss of both calcium and another mineral called phosphorus to depths of up to 60 micrometers in the enamel surface, which the researchers say is significant.
Even if people brush their teeth after a night of drinking, over the years repeated exposure could take its toll. Indeed, excessive brushing might make matters worse and lead to further loss of enamel. But they said: The tradition of enjoying different cheeses for dessert, or in combination with drinking wine, might have a beneficial effect on preventing dental erosion since cheeses contain calcium in a high concentration. This helps neutralise and boost the remineralising power of saliva to halt the acid attack.
But eating strawberries while supping on your vino or mixing sparkling whites with acid fruit juice to make a bucks fizz may spell trouble because this only adds to the acid attack. But it’s the way you consume it that’s all important. If you’re going to have a glass of wine do so with your meal and leave a break of at least 30 minutes afterwards before you brush your teeth and go to bed. Leaving time before brushing teeth gives the enamel a chance to recover from the acid attack and makes it less susceptible to being brushed away.

Taking care of our health should be done at an early age. Experts suggest we should start doing regular exercise of at least 30 minutes a day and eating proper diet at the age of 20. This gives us a better chance to stay slim later years in our life.
However, it’s not too late for adult people to start a healthy lifestyle. Any time they may opt to start living healthily by eating the right kinds of food and exercise accordingly. But when problems already emerged, then it takes more than exercise and diet to solve the problem.
As we age, microscopic pieces of heavy metal, such as mercury (from your fillings) or lead, or even iron are left in our body that block arteries and waiting to cause problems like heart disease. These are so small they can easily become embedded inside some tissue in the body. However, this can be mended by oral chelation.
By definition chelation is the use of EDTA to bind molecules, such as metals or minerals, and “chelate”, or remove them from the body. It cleanses the blocked veins and arteries, which then increases blood flow that carries oxygen and nutrients needed to achieve healthy body. By that it allows the body to receive the proper nourishment to recuperate, regenerate and operate normally once again.
